Malawi’s healthcare system is set to benefit from the m-mama emergency transport system, a $11.5 million initiative funded by the Vodafone Foundation, USAID, and other donors.
The program, aimed at improving maternal healthcare in rural areas, will offer lifesaving emergency transport for pregnant women and newborns.
With Malawi’s high maternal mortality rates, m-mama provides a critical solution by connecting community drivers and ambulances to transport patients when needed.
Already successful in Tanzania and Lesotho, where it helped reduce maternal deaths by over 25%, m-mama is expected to make a significant impact in Malawi.
The government is expected to cover annual operational costs, while further expansions are planned for Kenya and other African countries. The initiative aligns with global efforts to reduce maternal mortality.
