Kenyan athlete Ruth Chepngetich, the women’s world record holder, has decided to compete in the London Marathon.
Chepngetich set the women’s world record during the Chicago Marathon, finishing in two hours, nine minutes, and 57 seconds.
She became the first woman in history to run under two hours and 10 minutes. Her achievement broke the previous record held by Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa, improving it by two minutes.
Chepngetich is determined to compete in the London Marathon as well, stating,
“The London Marathon always brings together the best athletes in the world,”
“I didn’t know (setting the world record in Chicago) was possible, but I came to realise that dreams can come true.”
The marathon is scheduled to take place on 27 April 2025. It will feature other prominent athletes, including Dutch Olympic champion Sifan Hassan and her compatriot Peres Jepchirchir.
Peres achieved a time of two hours, 16 minutes, and 16 seconds last year. Commenting on the competition, Chepngetich said,
“Myself, Peres, and the other women are strong, so it will be a competitive one.”
“I want to prepare as best I can, and we will see if we can lower Peres’ world record. With the strength of the field, I think we can support each other, and maybe the world record will fall.”
