Zambia’s security forces, including the Police Service, Department of Immigration, and the Anti-Terrorism Unit, have foiled an alleged scheme targeting President Hakainde Hichilema. Two suspects, 42-year-old Mozambican national Jasten Mabulesse Candunde and 43-year-old Leonard Phiri from Sinda District, were arrested in Lusaka. Authorities seized charms, including a live chameleon, as part of the investigation.
Preliminary reports suggest the suspects, believed to be practicing witchdoctors, were hired by Nelson Banda, the brother of fugitive Emmanuel Jay Banda. The plot allegedly involved using witchcraft to harm the President, with an initial payment of K16,500 made from a promised K30,000 fee. The suspects were reportedly offered an additional K2,000,000 upon completing the scheme.
Police Public Relations Officer Rae Hamoonga confirmed the arrests and described the case as a serious threat to national security. “We are treating this matter with the utmost seriousness and will ensure justice is served,” Hamoonga said.
The suspects face several charges, including:
- Professing knowledge of witchcraft under the Witchcraft Act.
- Possession of charms under the same Act.
- Cruelty to wild animals in violation of the Zambia Wildlife Act.
The suspects remain in custody and are expected to appear in court soon. Efforts to apprehend Nelson Banda, the alleged mastermind, are ongoing.
The revelation of this plot has sparked nationwide concern. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities. “The safety of our leaders and citizens is our top priority,” Hamoonga stressed, assuring Zambians of the security services’ commitment to maintaining peace and stability.
This case underscores the persistent challenges to national security and the importance of collective vigilance. As investigations continue, Zambia’s security forces remain steadfast in their mission to safeguard the nation’s leadership and citizens.
