President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia has commended Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for his efforts in promoting peace and stability across the Eurasia region.
Speaking at the State House in Lusaka on Thursday during a farewell visit by Türkiye’s ambassador to Zambia, Istem Circiroglu, Hichilema expressed gratitude for Türkiye’s support of Zambia’s development in sectors such as health, tourism, education, and media.
“I thank President Erdogan, the government, and the people of Türkiye for their significant contributions to stabilizing the Eurasia region. Peace and security are essential for all of us, and instability anywhere affects us all,” Hichilema said, noting Türkiye’s efforts in facilitating trade through the Black Sea and addressing challenges such as migration and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The Zambian leader also highlighted Türkiye’s economic progress and corporate advancements, emphasizing Zambia’s desire to learn and collaborate to enhance bilateral relations.
Hichilema described Zambia and Türkiye as partners bound by shared values of democracy, good governance, the rule of law, and respect for human rights. He also acknowledged Türkiye’s expanding ties with Africa through trade and investment.
Circiroglu noted that trade between the two nations currently stands at $52 million, with potential for further growth. She reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to strengthening ties with Zambia across various sectors.
“We will continue to be a reliable partner to Zambia, working together in trade, business, education, and other areas to build a better future,” she said.
Hichilema expressed enthusiasm for an upcoming state visit to Ankara to deepen relations between the two nations.
