Zimbabwe’s coffee industry is set for significant growth with the launch of the Zimbabwe Barista Throwdown 2025, a nationwide competition that aims to showcase local barista talent and promote Zimbabwean coffee internationally.
Organised by Changamiri Coffee Company in partnership with UAE-based Artisan Empire and Living Coffee Foundation, the competition will run for six months and will culminate in the first Zimbabwe Coffee Festival to be held at Changamiri Coffee Resort in Vumba on 4-5 September 2025.
Reviving a Once-Thriving Industry
Zimbabwe was once renowned for its premium Arabica coffee, but production has declined due to climate change and economic hardship. Now, with global coffee consumption expected to grow by 4.22% annually between 2024 and 2028, the country is positioning itself as a major player in the speciality coffee market.
Speaking on the impact of the competition, Changamiri Coffee Company CEO Hillary Chindodo stressed that ZBT 2025 is not just about barista skills.
“The Zimbabwe Barista Competition is a movement to celebrate the unique flavours, craftsmanship and innovation in our coffee industry,” Chindodo said. “Zimbabwean coffee has a rich story to tell and this platform allows us to share it with the world.”
A Gateway to Investment and Global Recognition
With Zimbabwe’s coffee exports showing signs of recovery, the event is expected to attract the attention of international buyers and provide local farmers, roasters and investors with the opportunity to partner with global coffee brands.
“Coffee is not just a beverage; it is a multi-billion dollar industry,” Chindodo said. “Zimbabwe has the potential to be a major player in Africa’s specialty coffee sector.”
The initiative is a milestone for Zimbabwe’s coffee industry, encouraging investment, boosting exports and strengthening the country’s position in the global coffee market.
