The Zimbabwean short musical film “Kare Kare Kwazvo” has been selected for preservation in one of Switzerland’s leading film archives.
Produced in 2004, the film is set in ancient times and follows the struggles of a woman trying to provide for her family during a devastating famine.
Co-producer Olaf Koschke emphasized the film’s historical significance, noting that it was the first Zimbabwean production funded through cultural support rather than development aid. He highlighted its innovative storytelling style, which incorporated elements of community theatre and authentic Zimbabwean traditions.
“This film marked a milestone in Zimbabwean cinematic history due to its unique narrative approach and technical creativity,” Koschke said.
Eresiana Hwede, Director of the International Images Film Festival for Women, praised the film for its authenticity.
“This achievement is crucial for Zimbabwean filmmaking because authentic storytelling is essential in preserving our cultural identity,” she said.
The selection for preservation ensures that “Kare Kare Kwazvo” will be safeguarded for future generations, showcasing Zimbabwe’s rich heritage and creative spirit on the global stage.
