The Press Council of South Africa has expelled Independent Media with immediate effect, citing the publisher’s refusal to adhere to council rulings. The expulsion follows Independent’s decision not to retract a controversial article published by the Sunday Independent, which severely damaged the reputation of journalist Karyn Maughan. The article drew comparisons between Maughan and Nazi filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl, leading to widespread criticism.
After the Press Council ordered the column’s removal and a formal apology to Maughan, Independent Media defied the sanction. Despite initially appealing the decision, the council rejected their case, prompting Independent Media to withdraw from the council, a move that was swiftly followed by their expulsion. This marks only the second time the Press Council has expelled a member organization.
Press Council Chairperson, Judge Fritz Brand, expressed regret over the decision, emphasizing that it is unfortunate when media outlets fail to abide by industry regulations, especially after voluntarily committing to them.
Independent Media had previously withdrawn from the Press Council in 2016 but rejoined in early 2024. This latest conflict, which includes past unresolved rulings, has highlighted growing tensions between the media group and the council, raising concerns about press freedom and ethical journalism in South Africa.
