In Kuerbowni Payam, Guit County, Unity State, a 20-year-old lady was fatally beaten by her father on Tuesday night.
Following a quarrel over an arranged forced marriage, County Commissioner Kawai Chany told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that the event occurred at approximately 5 p.m.
Nyahok Wanbul Thore was recognized as the deceased.
According to Chany, her father had found a potential husband who was prepared to give the customary dowry, but the deceased disagreed and was battered to death.
The Commissioner said that the murderer’s father had been taken into custody by the local police and was pending trial.
“Wanbul Thore was apprehended by security for the murder of his daughter, and he will be lodged in the Bentiu police headquarters for custody while the matter is being investigated,” Chany stated.
Civil society activist Thijin Yian from Unity State denounced the murder.
“A young woman is being abused because she refused to be coerced into marriage. Yian stated that the father of the deceased need to be tried prior to the mobile court’s return to Juba on August 22.
In South Sudan, many families force their daughters, even those under the age of 18, into marriages in exchange for dowries.
A 2017 UNICEF research found that 52% of South Sudanese girls get married before they turn 18.
Any individual of marriageable age has the right to start a family, according to Article 15 of the South Sudanese constitution, while women and girls are guaranteed the right to provide their consent before being married under Article 17.
