Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has announced government initiatives to support small-scale miners and boost the mining sector’s contribution to Tanzania’s economy.
Speaking during a working tour in Tunduru District, Ruvuma Region, she highlighted strategies under Vision 2030, including the recent inauguration of a modern mineral market to help miners secure better prices.
The government has also provided drilling rigs to lower production costs, contributing to a 10.9% annual growth rate in the sector, which now accounts for 9.1% of Tanzania’s GDP.
President Samia emphasized that 40% of the sector’s revenue comes from small-scale miners and praised investor-friendly laws for the industry’s success. She criticized local leaders for their slow response to misinformation on social media, urging a more proactive approach to counter false claims.
In addition to mining, President Samia discussed broader development efforts in Tunduru, including electricity, water, healthcare, and agriculture projects.
She assured residents that measures are being taken to address human-wildlife conflicts, particularly with elephants damaging crops.
The government is increasing rangers and using drones to protect both people and wildlife. Additionally, four new ambulances were provided to improve healthcare services in the district.
